Unknown Specials Christmas Countdown #7: Father Christmas and The Snowman
Like British Christmas
specials? If so, I recommend that you not only check out The Snowman (1982), but also that you try watching Father Christmas (1991) from
the same creators. To tell you a bit about the latter of these short films, Father Christmas is actually not as much about Christmas as it is about the
man taking a holiday to places like Scotland, France, and Vegas. Unfortunately,
unless you record PBS playing the British voiceover onto a VHS tape 20 years
ago, you’ll probably see a much less entertaining, over-saccharine,
Americanized voiceover, which ruins what made the special unique and hilarious
in the first place. You see, the original British voiceover depicts Father Christmas as a
grounded, grumpy, and overworked old man, who offers some hilarious, gruff
insights into how the holiday rush can get to you to the point where you want
to just take a cruise to avoid the thing altogether. And not like Christmas
with the Kranks! But the American version gave him new dialogue that takes away
all of that and makes him jolly, yet boring. Up until a while ago, I wasn't sure how to get my hands on
the British dialogue without going to Britain or ordering the film somewhere online, but it seems the company fixed
that. Here's what you do: go to YouTube, find Illuminated Films, and click "Exclusive Version of
Father Christmas" and enjoy Mel Smith. Yes, the Albino from Princess Bride plays
Father Christmas. You can also watch it below, along with The Snowman. :)
