If you haven’t seen Arthur
Christmas (2011), it’s another incredibly fun, heartfelt, hilarious, and unique offering
from Aardman Animations and Sony Pictures Animation (and the first joint project the two studios have done together!). It seemed to work pretty well to me, with Aardman providing the designs and script, and Sony Pictures telling the story with smooth CG
animation and a fantastic voice cast.
As for the story, being St. Nicholas is a family business
with an army of elves and a high-tech underground ice bunker and Postman Pat’s
camouflage spaceship. But the current Santa (Malcom Claus) has become doteful and is out of
his element, while "Grandsanta" talks as if the tech that makes things efficient
also ruins the magic. Altogether, Grandsanta is brash and old-school in his methods.
Santa's oldest son, Steve, however, is a great administrator and has put together the tech to make
Santa’s trip possible and efficient. At the same time though, Steve is not good with kids, and when things go wrong, he just
calls it a "margin of error" and leaves. The other son, Arthur, may be a klutz and a scatterbrain, but he believes in and loves the Christmas spirit the most of all. No
one person is the perfect Santa--they all have problems and conflicting ideas--but they all seem to find a happy medium with the future of the holiday business and the spirit of Christmas tradition.
Definitely check it out!
