Kicking off, I have Lamb Chop’s
Hanukkah, because when else will I talk about this special? The characters and
puppets feel likable, the plot thrives on fun and calming scenes alike, songs
are well-done and catchy, and just like Peanuts Christmas or Christmas Carol,
it provides a lot of education on the history and heart of the holiday. The
celebrities give over the top when it works, and provide human connection when
it’s needed.
The puppet characters bring a genuine sense of childish glee to
everything they do, and despite the main plot being about Charlie Horse
obsessing about winning a contest his antics feel in character and never annoy
the audience. He is supposed to be a child, and it feels like something a child
would do. Fun fact I actually got my 2nd grade teacher to pull my mother aside
and ask if our family was Jewish because I could answer every question in class
about Hanukkah just from watching this special. Still a better Hanukkah special
than Eight Crazy Nights, at least. I genuinely would love to see some more Hanukkah
or Kwanzaa specials if it meant this much education and fun.
Have you watched any of these? What
interesting holiday specials have you seen? Let us know your favorite under-watched
Christmas/holiday movie or special and share this with someone who can’t get enough of
the holidays.
