Also from Amazon and based on a book
comes The Snowy Day (2016). This special captured the layered tissue paper
look of the book incredibly well in motion and maintains a child’s perspective
throughout without using tropey imagination sequences. It’s just a boy enjoying a day
in the snow while he waits for the Christmas party that night. We see an African-American boy meet everyone living on his street, including the Jewish girl and her parents that live next door, the Asian
woman down the street, the Middle Eastern man who owns the store,
and the African-American men singing gospel remixes of carols. Yes, the
special is that subtle, yet the diversity inclusion feels surprisingly more
natural than other examples of this same type of inclusion. (Even if it’s done
only for brownie points, which I could easily take away for no LGBTQI+
representation.) Still, the special remains chill and feels more relaxing than
other Christmas specials for kids, and I respect the creators for doing
something more laid-back and respectful of children's intelligence and
patience.
